Play Better Golf & Have More Fun by Focusing On Strategy Instead of Swing Tips

Ever go for a golf lesson and walk away more confused than when you arrived?

Hips to the target. Keep the club on plane. Pronate your wrists. Swing slower. Swing faster.

If you’ve had a lesson or just been playing golf for any amount of time you’ve heard these swing tips. It’s all too much!! No golfer, not even the pros, can play good golf with all these things to think about.

These “tips” actually end up wrecking your game, making golf a lot less fun and ballooning your scores.

What if there is a better way?

I’m here to tell you that there is. It’s a way that I’ve been using for the last year or so to drastically lower my scores while also having MUCH more fun on the golf course.

That way is focusing on golf strategy and the mental aspects of the game.

It’s so true. Once you can make solid contact with the ball you get better by focusing on strategy and the mental aspects of the game – not by focusing on your swing.

The Art & Science of Better Golf

If you’re a mid to high handicapper, playing better golf isn’t about fixing your back swing, releasing the clubhead or increasing swing speed. It’s about controlling your emotions, having a game plan and playing smarter golf.

After years of slow progress and frustration, I finally lowered my scores and have more fun on the course by focusing on the right things:

  • The Mental Game: Technical swing thoughts during a round will kill your scores and make golf miserable. You need to conserve your mental energy to focus on the strategic elements of the game, not on your swing. We need to discover the right things to think about so we’ll hit the ball better and put ourselves in good spots. It’s all about committing to shots 100% and playing within our own game.
  • The Strategic Game: Golf strategy can be broken up into 3 main parts – navigating the course correctly, knowing and managing your own game and having the mental toughness to commit to playing the game you have today. Let’s face it, sometimes we don’t bring our A game to the course and that’s ok! We just need to accept it and make the proper adjustments. If we do, we can still play great (and fun!) golf.
  • The Finesse Game: Tour pros can lower their scores by focusing on swing mechanics to get another 20 yards from their driver. For us mortals – the mid to high handicappers – focusing on mechanics just leads to more frustrating shots, lost balls and higher scores. For us to lower our scores we should be focusing on what I call, the finesse game. These are the shots where we can forget about mechanics and focus on touch and feel. Essentially these are shots from about 100 yards in. Golf is about getting the ball in the hole with the least number of shots and improving your finesse game is the fastest path to shattering your scoring barrier.

  1. No, that’s not literally the plot of Generation X. It’s a story about young adults of the same age set about six years later. But both the book and The Breakfast Club feature main characters named Claire and Andy, so there’s that.

Play Smarter. Have more fun.
